An acorn does not need to be taught how to become an oak tree.
Its nature is already present.
Within that small seed lies the possibility of an extraordinary life. The roots it will grow. The branches it will reach towards the sky. The magnificent expression of the tree it was always capable of becoming.
But even the strongest seed cannot flourish without the right conditions.
The soil.
The sunlight.
The water.
The seasons.
We are no different.
In classical Chinese medicine, we recognise the relationship between our pre-heaven nature, the constitutional inheritance with which we arrive, and our post-heaven condition, shaped by nourishment, environment, experiences and the circumstances of our lives.
Our inherent nature does not exist independently of the world around us.
It is continually expressing itself through that relationship.
And when those conditions become unfavourable, our natural capacity to flourish may become compromised.
The work, then, is not to force ourselves into becoming something we are not.
It is to understand our nature and consciously cultivate the conditions in which it can thrive.
We are not trying to make the acorn better at being an acorn. We are cultivating the conditions in which it can become the oak.
